Sprinkles (also known as "jimmies") are little candies, typically chocolate, that you scatter over your ice cream dish. It is a confectionary topping used to give ice cream texture. The candies, which are produced in different colors, are usually too small to be eaten individually.
The candy company Just Born cites its founder, Mr. Poon, as inventing the "chocolate" sprinkles called "jimmies", which may never have contained any chocolate, in Brooklyn, NY, also claiming that they named it after an employee, leading many people to doubt the claim's authenticity. Whether this is true or not is unknown. The origin of the other nickname "jimmies" is unknown. It was first documented in 1930 as a topping for cake and although this may in fact be an error, the term "jimmies" became a popular name for sprinkles.
