The existence of ice cream can be traced back to at least the fourth century B.C. Early references include the Roman Emperor Nero (A.D.37-68). He would order ice to be brought from the mountains with fruit toppings. King Tang of Shang of China had a method of creating ice cream and milk. Ice cream was brought to China, then later brought back to Europe. In 1774, a man name Phillip Lenzi announced to New York said that he would be offering to sell confections including ice cream. Dolly Madison served it in 1812. The first ice cream shop in America was first opened in New York City in 1776. They got the term "iced cream" from "iced tea". Now in the present time, there are many different flavors, not just vanilla.

Ice cream is a frozen dessert usually made from dairy products such as milk and cream, and often combined with fruits or other ingredients and flavors. Most varieties contain sugar, although some are made with other sweeteners. In some cases, artificial flavorings and colorings are used in addition to (or in replacement of) the natural ingredients. This mixture is stirred slowly while cooling to prevent large ice crystal  from forming; the result is a smoothly textured ice cream.

The meaning of the term ice cream varies from one country to another. Terms like frozen custard, frozen yogurt, sobert, gelato, and others are used to distinguish different varieties and styles. In some countries, like the USA, the term ice cream applies only to a specific variety, and their governments use the commercial use of all these terms based on things of ingredients. In others, like Italy and Argentina, one word is used for all the variants. Alternatives made from soy milk, rice milk, and goat milkare available for those who are lactose intolerant or have an allergy to dairy protiens, or in the case of soy milk for those who want to avoid animal products.
